Leveraging XR for Learning
The XR Education Design Lab investigates how immersive technologies — known as extended reality (XR) or virtual reality (VR) — can bring transformative learning experiences into the classroom.
Our Mission
Traditional schooling, focused on transmitting knowledge from teacher to student, leaves many learners behind. Emerging technologies offer opportunities to put learners in the driver’s seat, but unless they are well-designed they will just maintain the status quo. We believe that extended reality (XR) technologies should be designed to support exploration and experiential learning, putting learners at the center to spark their curiosity, give them opportunities that are impossible in typical classrooms, and meaningfully apply their knowledge.
Therefore, at the XR ED Lab we:
- Design XR applications grounded in the science of learning that meet real needs of instructors and students
- Study how they impact learning outcomes that go beyond what you can read in a textbook
- Leverage immersive environments to study how people learn complex skills and develop a motivation for learning
